To most people the sky is the limit, but for September’s ArkansasViBE Bartender of the Month, that just wasn’t enough! Growing up in Wichita, Kansas, he spent many weekends frequenting air shows with his family and soon developed a passion for Aviation. After graduating from Rose Hill High School in Wichita, Phillip Ring moved to Arkansas to attend Henderson State University’s Aviation program. After entering the program he was soon donned none other than the beloved character “ Goose” from the 1986 blockbuster film “ Top Gun” for his drive to be the best he could be in his class. After graduating from Henderson State with a degree in Aviation; “Goose” soon discovered his love for flying didn’t offer as many job opportunities as expected at the time.
So, Once again he decided to go back to school for a degree in Psychology. At that time he started a bartending job to help pay for school with Back Porch Grill. Owner of Back Porch Grill, Charles Jennings, saw something different in “Goose” and they soon began a business plan to open an upscale lounge in the upstairs portion of the restaurant to be called Martini’s on the Bay. Charles began teaching Goose the ropes of the business and they began building the lounge with no detail spared. This upscale lounge offers the ideal setting; they have a full bar including upscale cocktails, fresh fruit martinis, unique liqueurs, and rare scotches. They have comfortable seating with oversized bar chairs and chic red leather booths. There are even hooks under the bar to hang your purses on which are convenient because every night is ladies night at Martini’s on the Bay!
Visit “Goose” for one of his unique and tasty martinis; h

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. This “Big City Girl” is happy to call the” Spa City” her new home. After playing college volleyball at The University of Las Vegas, and turning pro overseas, she graduated with a degree in Communications/Advertising and quickly advanced in her career as a Senior Buyer for Allegiant Airlines. “It was a great accomplishment!” but “so much, so fast”. After realizing that she needed to take a break she moved to North Arkansas with her parents to assist them in opening up a new club. After helping her parents out, her father suggested that she move to Hot Springs for the summer and enjoy herself after all of her hard work. Soon after getting settled in, Alicia took a job as a bartender at a local entertainment club. She had learned to bartend in Las Vegas in previous years and decides to put those unique Vegas skills to use. Alicia quickly realized she hadn’t lost her touch, and offered a unique Vegas flair to it! Alicia has definitely had her dose of fast-paced, high volume crowds, which she says; most of her training came from but “I believe the most important thing in bartending is getting to know people and remembering their names and what they like, which in return keeps them coming back!!” If you don’t find her behind the bar at Dockers, you may find her at the nearest fishing hole, enjoying her new found hobby, where she enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Josh at least once a week! “I’m totally addicted” she says! Alicia is always looking forward to meeting a new face. So, stop in, and pull up a stool, she just might have a new adventure or a good ole’ fishin story to share with you!
Sam Jones also
known as “Sam” or "Sammy” is definitely a Hot Springs favorite and has
been a permanent staple at the Longshot’s Saloon for quite a while. Working as
a bartender there for 8 1/2 years, Sammy started with Longshot’s when he was
19, introduced by his Uncle Heavy (owner of
Heavy's Bar and Grill)
to Doug and Georgia Prichard, owners of Longshot Saloon, which were looking for
a barback at the time for busiest time of year, Oaklawn’s yearly race
meet."I honestly thought it was
going to be a onetime gig, says Sammy, but I hung in there and as soon as I
turned 21, the next thing I know I’m attending " The University of Georgia"
which was a nightly dose of learning the world of mixology from his new boss
Georgia! And…. here I am! I owe it all
to Georgia and Doug for giving me a chance and appreciate all they’ve done for
me!” When we asked Doug about Sammy’s eight years at the Longshot he quotes,
“What can I say? He’s a good kid!” “Georgia and I love and appreciate him!”
The Longshot is
located just feet from Oaklawn Thoroughbred Track and is known for its avid
race fans, especially during Oaklawn’s race season. Sammy always looks forward
to seeing the many great people he's met over the years during the season. He had
no idea he would became quite so popular when he decided to grow his infamous Mohawk.
Demanding attention this multicolored 8” tall hair standing straight up, drew
the attention of some very curious onlookers and creating instant fame! Sammy
recalls a funny story while at the track for their Saturday race ritual before
work, where he would meet up with Dillon, his well known “partner in crime” aka
“Titty1 and Titty 2” behind the bar.“There was an older gentlemen staring at my hair with such a puzzled
look on his face, and he ran face first into a pole!” “It was hilarious!” notes
Sammy.“Dillon and I would actually have
people come up out of the blue and ask if they could take a picture with me, of
course until Dillon started telling them that we would have to charge!” Many
people come out to see the many antics that Dillon and Sammy put on at the bar
which have included wearing women’s tank tops, putting buckets on their heads,
dancing and singing behind the bar, and his favorite memory, them spraying the
whole crowd while standing on the beer tubs to the well known song “Shout”. “We
are definitely a team and it makes our job a lot of fun!”Outside of the bar he loves to play with his
3year old English Bulldog named “Tank” which is the father of the well known
dog, “Odie” owned by Georgia and Doug.Sammy says proudly, that he thinks that’s kinda cool! “Especially since
you don’t hear of too many dogs having their own restaurant!” referring to the
newly opened Odie’s House of Blue’s &
Dinner Club.
